Filmed In North Platte, Nebraska, USA

Photography, audio and percussion by Tim Sandys, 2016

Tim Sandys traveled to the Bailey Yard in North Platte Nebraska. His research brief included the study of the town and the environment of the world's largest train yard, including the overall infrastructure and examples of both symbiotic imperative and alienating strain between the yard and the community serving it. While studying the audio recordings of the yard's ambient sounds, complex rhythmic patterns of rolling stock were digitally isolated. The mathematical relationships of these sounds were extrapolated into 9/4 and 13/4 experimental percussion pieces that were later performed by the artist and edited to accompany the imagery of the Bailey Yard and it's neighboring town. Other elements within the audio track include a vocal rendering of religious and patriotic material left in the artist's motel room and casual political exchanges in local bars and diners. Cotard’s Subway

Filmed on subway systems of Tokyo, Kyoto and New York.

Body camera and audio: Tim Sandys, 2020

The artist wore a hidden body camera to record fellow travellers on the subway rail systems of Tokyo, Kyoto and New York. This public action and subsequent digital manipulation explores civic participation, infrastructure and the complicity of the viewer's gaze.

Functional System

03:22

Documentation of sculptural work - installation for Glasgow International, 2018 at Laurieston Arena, Gorbals.

Functional System (2018) - Viscalene, birch, MDF - 280 x 280 x 193cm

This film briefly documents Tim Sandys' sculptural work Functional System, installed for Glasgow International 2018 at Laurieston Arena, Gorbals. As part of the broader exhibition, Tilting At Windmills (featuring the works of Lizzie Hudson and Bobby Sayers), the work contributed to a series of artworks and events addressing Glasgow's civic and communal identity. Functional System draws from compressor elements within turbofan engines long produced in Glasgow's aviation industry. The title refers to Durkheim's societal anlyses of structural functionalism as well as the uncertain status of a conspicuous new mechanism in a public space. The piece was installed on the 19th April, 2018 for the opening of the Glasgow International Festival. It was vandalised and destroyed the following afternoon. Audio - kinetic manipulation of steel pylon and vessels of canal water, 2018

Using an electricity pylon struck with steel bars and glass vessels filled with canal water, recordings of acoustic experiments were combined with the humming of wind through the high-voltage cables far above. The resonating tones and percussive rumbles were digitally augmented using mathematical ratios extrapolated directly from the structural rhythms within the pylon's design, the ratio of voltage to current used by the national grid, and the outer electron shell energy distributuions in water molecules. The resulting audio track accompanies slowly shifting images of the pylon reflected in the canal water, taken daily over a period of weeks. www.timsandys.com

Territorial Gain

In this rooftop setting, both artwork and viewer share notions of exposure, shelter, status and the movement of air. Tim Sandys associates his work with societal and civic structures. Using actions and interventions, he carefully identifies points of strain, failure or tension within city experience and exploits them. The application of his working methods reflect ethnographic or qualitative research without proselytising or conclusion. This practice promotes an exercise in empathy in the face of impersonal civilian trappings. These actions and subsequent artefacts tackle the negated status of the individual functioning in a societal context. Using both empowering and provocative methods, this practice flirts simultaneously with deviance and empathy. www.timsandys.com
